Many gear heads and tone freaks will exclaim you can damage your precious tubes valves for the UK by hitting them with high voltage before they are warmed up. How exactly can this happen – if at all? When the amp is turned on, the volume slowly rises as the tubes are heated up and able to conduct. Surely there must be something wrong with this stand-by theory. Then why do so many manufacturers tell you let the amp warm up before you use it?
After reading his section on stand-by switching I became curious as to why it is so pervasive in modern guitar amplifiers? Below is an excerpt from his book on power supply design, which gave me the idea for this article. In the bigger versions of the Bassman, money was saved by using power supply caps that were rated only for the working voltage, not the peak voltage which occurred before that valves start drawing current.
As everyone knows, Marshall simply copied the Bassman without a second thought, complete with standby switch, so now we have the two biggest names in the industry using standby switches, and the rest is history. In a properly designed amp, a standby switch is nothing more than an expensive, oversized mute switch. Cathode stripping Let us define the basic elements and operation of a tube.

Four decades of guitars from Czechoslovakia. When I wrote my original article about Eastern European guitars [Guitars of the Cold War, Vintage Guitar Magazine, January ], I was still in the process of researching the roots of these instruments. In the first two installments, I had focused on Russia almost exclusively, though I did mention Jolana guitars briefly.
Since then, a lot of new information has come to light, enough to dedicate this third installment of “Guitars Of The Cold War” exclusively to guitars built in Czechoslovakia. This is their story. The Czech Republic has a rich musical instrument building heritage. The Bohemia region is renowned for string instrument manufacture. The 30 Watt one is a cheap mass manifactured amp that looks good on paper, but will suck, or 2. Well, that may be true for some amp manufactures. I had a look at some Alesis and Behringer modelling amps and compared them to the amps of Line6 and Roland.
