But, with more than 75 years of shipping records in the Gibson books, and dozens of variations on numerical schemes used over the years, serial numbers sometimes do little to shed light on the origin of a mysterious Gibson. With vintage Gibsons selling at auction for as much as half a million dollars, Davidson will sometimes roll up his sleeves and poke around in the ledgers, but only as time allows. The earliest volumes contain hundreds of yellowed pages covered front and back with rows of handwritten numbers. It can take Davidson several hours to locate a specific serial number, if he can find it at all. Even then, there may be four other guitars—of all different models—with the same number sequence. Serial numbers can pull up multiple guitars from multiple years. To combat the problem, the company upped its serial number sequence last year from eight digits to nine.

Four decades of guitars from Czechoslovakia. When I wrote my original article about Eastern European guitars [Guitars of the Cold War, Vintage Guitar Magazine, January ], I was still in the process of researching the roots of these instruments. In the first two installments, I had focused on Russia almost exclusively, though I did mention Jolana guitars briefly. Since then, a lot of new information has come to light, enough to dedicate this third installment of “Guitars Of The Cold War” exclusively to guitars built in Czechoslovakia.
This is their story. The Czech Republic has a rich musical instrument building heritage. The Bohemia region is renowned for string instrument manufacture. Some of the world’s best violins and cellos come from this part of the world. Amati of Kraslice has been in the instrument-manufacturing business for over years.

About Guitars Buying a new guitar is a considerable investment for most of us. An instrument is all about inspiration. You are the musician and the guitar is the tool you use to express your feelings and music. This has nothing to do with what models you choose or how much they cost. Some basic knowledge about the different wood types, neck and body profiles, pickups etc will help you in making the best choice.
However, over the last decade or so, the MIMs has gotten a considerable face lift and the overall quality is very high. In fact, the reason why they are cheaper, ha sless to do with quality but rather lower labour costs, cheaper type of laquer and apply methods etc. Japanese Fenders are considered to be above the Mexicans and perhaps even just as good as the US. In the 80s and early 90s, Japanese Fenders were well known for being superior to any other models and the quality is still top notch.
Maple or rosewood necks? Neck wood and contour plays an important role in how the guitar sounds and how it feels to play. Some like thick necks and some prefer a thinner contour.

Epiphone Les Paul Epiphone Les Paul Dating back to and once a major rival of Gibson, the Epiphone company and brand were purchased by Gibson’s parent company in Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models.
All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. Around , Les Paul, a legendary musician and musical electronics and solidbody guitar pioneer, created one of his early solid bodied guitars after-hours in the Epiphone factory out of a 4X4″ piece of wood.

Serial numbers conflict and can be more of a hindrance than a help. Finding the guitar’s true age can be like something out of “CSI,” where you figure out a date based on a variety of forensic evidence–not just a serial number. Serial Numbers Look for an ink stamp. The serial number on Gibson Les Paul guitars is located on the back of the headstock.
The earliest Les Pauls made in may lack serial numbers. Beginning in , a three-digit serial number was stamped on the top. Later in the year, and continuing through , Gibson stamped a five- or six-digit number in ink on the back of the headstock. The first digit is the year of manufacture; the remaining digits are the production number. You may also find a second number on the headstock backs of pre guitars. The FON consists of a letter, which corresponds to a year, and then a four-digit number followed by a one- or two-digit number.

On the surface it has everything wrong with it. As a guitar dealer told me as he turned up his nose at it: It was made in the dark year of , it has one of them there Maple three piece necks, a shallow cut top, heavy Mahogany body, chrome hardware, it has the evil but I don’t know why volute and it has that wacky injection molded machine gun chainsaw case thingy. It also has the best amplified sound I’ve ever heard from a Paul and I’ve heard hundreds of them live, trust me.
Yikes, it cuts through any other guitar.
